Traditional Method: Relies on naturally impermeable clay or soil to form evaporation ponds.

This method is prone to seepage, contamination from the soil, and is difficult to clean,

Modern Method: Uses HDPE geomembrane liners to create a fully sealed, impermeable,

and clean evaporation system. This is the standard for modern, high-quality salt production.

 

 

 

How HDPE Geomembranes are Used in the Salt Production Process:

 

Salt production involves a series of interconnected ponds where seawater is gradually evaporated,

concentrating the brine until salt crystals (NaCl) precipitate. HDPE liners are used throughout this cascade:

 

Initial Storage/Reservoir Ponds: To store incoming seawater.

 

Condenser Ponds (Concentration Ponds): Where the majority of water evaporation occurs, concentrating the brine.

 

Crystallizer Ponds: The final ponds where salt crystals form and are harvested.

Salt HDPE Geomembrane Liner  Installation and Maintenance :

 

Subgrade Preparation: The earth must be properly compacted, smooth, and free of all sharp

objects (roots, rocks). This is the most critical step for a successful installation.

 

Expert Seaming:

All field seams must be made by certified welders using thermal fusion (wedge or extrusion) and tested rigorously

(e.g., air pressure, vacuum box) to ensure a watertight seal.

 

Anchoring:

The liner must be securely anchored in a perimeter trench ("anchor trench") to hold it in place when the pond is filled.

 

Cleaning and Disinfection:

Between cycles, the liner can be pressure-washed and disinfected with approved chemicals

(e.g., chlorine, potassium permanganate) that are compatible with HDPE.
