What is a Uniaxial Woven Polyester Geogrid?


It is a high-strength, synthetic polymer grid material, manufactured by weaving high-tenacity

polyester yarns in a specific pattern. The key term "uniaxial" means its tensile strength

is primarily oriented in a single direction (along the machine direction or roll length).

This makes it ideal for applications where the primary tensile forces are expected from one direction.

 

 

Uniaxial Woven Polyester Geogrid Advantages Limitations :
 

1.Very High Tensile Strength Strength is Directional:

Not suitable for applications requiring equal strength in all directions (for that, biaxial geogrids are used).
 
2.Excellent Creep Resistance for long-term performance
Sensitivity to pH:
Polyester yarns can be susceptible to hydrolysis (chemical degradation) in extreme pH environments
(highly alkaline or acidic soils), though modern coatings are designed to mitigate this.
 
3.Rigid Apertures for superior soil interlock
Generally more expensive than polypropylene geogrids, but justified by superior performance.
 
4.Durable and Robust coating protects fibers

Uniaxial woven polyester geogrids are used in applications where forces are predominantly in one direction:

 

Reinforced Soil Walls (MSE Walls):

This is the most common application. The geogrid layers are placed horizontally between

soil layers to create a stable, reinforced mass that can retain soil at a steep angle.

 

Reinforced Steep Slopes: Similar to walls, but for slopes at angles steeper than what the

soil could naturally maintain. The geogrid provides the necessary tensile strength to prevent slope failure.

 

Embankment Stabilization over Soft Soils: When building an embankment on soft, weak ground,

layers of geogrid are used to prevent circular slip failures and distribute the load, ensuring global stability.

 

Foundation Reinforcement:

In some cases, they are used to improve the bearing capacity of foundations.

Site & Soil Analysis: Geotechnical engineers analyze the soil conditions, loads, and required wall height.

Design: Engineers specify the geogrid type (polyester), its strength, length, and vertical spacing between layers.

The length is crucial for creating a stable reinforced zone.

 

Construction:

A leveling pad is prepared.

The first layer of wall facing units is placed.

A layer of select backfill is placed and compacted.

The polyester geogrid is rolled out over the compacted soil and connected to the wall face.

The process repeats: backfill, compact, place geogrid, until the top is reached.
