Geotextiles
Four basic functions are defined for the geotextile:
Filtration
Separation
Drainage
Reinforcement
Filtration
Filtration functions to restrict the migration of fine soil particles from a soil mass while remaining permeable to water movement greater than, or at least equivalent to the permeability of the protected soil.
Drainage
Water is conveyed along the path of the geotextile due to its construction, and then to an outlet. Water may be vertically or horizontally conveyed. Drainage is related to the role of filtration, and is a function of the permeability of a geotextile and its pore opening size or porometry.
Separation
Separation is the function which prevents two distinct soils of different materials from intermixing. The key factors for a geotextile to satisfy this function are porometry, toughness and strength.
Reinforcement
This function involves the stabilization of a soil mass by provision of tensile strength to the soil-fabric system.
Geotextile selection can be expressed as a relationship between these 4 basic functions and the properties required by the design engineer in order to satisfy certain criteria, which would relate to a specific application.
Non-woven geotextiles help to save construction costs. It is used as a separator between two layers of material with different properties, avoiding loss of material, allowing to reduce the volume of soil.
Using of the separator ensures that the mechanical properties of the land layers are kept safe, the working load will be accommodated and the loading distribution in the ground is better.

1. Suiyu Railway Test Section
Our country used geosynthetics in ballastless track for the first time, verifying the feasibility of polypropylene geotextile in the sliding layer.
2. Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway and Wuhan-Guangzhou High-speed Railway
CRTSⅠ/Ⅱ type slab track is widely used, and polypropylene geotextile is used as the key material of the isolation layer and sliding layer.
3. Zhengzhou-Xuzhou Passenger Dedicated Line
CRTSⅢ type track slab was used on a large scale for the first time, with 700g/㎡ high-strength polypropylene geotextile, marking the maturity of domestic production technology.
